The approval of Bremelanotide was based on the RECONNECT clinical program, which comprised two randomized Phase 3 trials involving 1,267 premenopausal women diagnosed with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder.

The results demonstrated:

  • Statistically significant improvements in sexual desire scores;
  • Reduction in distress associated with low sexual desire;
  • A safety profile considered adequate for the studied indication.
Researchers’ Observation: Despite positive outcomes, the authors themselves emphasized that the observed effect size was modest, reinforcing that benefits should be interpreted within the specific clinical context evaluated.

What Does FDA Approval Mean?

FDA approval indicates that the drug demonstrated sufficient evidence of safety and efficacy for a specific clinical indication after undergoing rigorous clinical testing.

In the case of Bremelanotide, approval is strictly limited to the treatment of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women, as established by the U.S. regulatory agency.
